A VIVA FLORIDA 500 SPECIAL EVENT!
JOIN US ON SATURDAY, APRIL 6
On Saturday, April 6, coinciding with the 500th anniversary of Juan Ponce de Leon’s arrival on Florida’s east coast, University Press of Florida (UPF) welcomes the public to attend La Florida, a commemorative symposium considering the world, culture and environment encountered by early explorers of the state. Part of the Viva Florida 500 initiative, La Florida will take place at 10:15 a.m. in the Lucille T. Maloney Classroom at the Florida Museum of Natural History. There is no admission fee and light refreshments will be provided.
“To celebrate the Quincentennial, we wanted to engage people with Florida’s remarkable history and culture by giving them a glimpse of the world Spanish explorers discovered upon first landing,” says UPF Director, Meredith Morris-Babb. La Florida features a panel of five distinguished scholars, four of them hailing from the University of Florida: Michael Gannon, William H. Marquardt, Kathy Deagan, Steve Noll, and Chris F. Meindl (University of South Florida). Collectively, their expertise represents Florida studies, history, geography, archaeology, and ethnology.
Presentations will provide insight into Ponce de Leon’s voyage and examine the events that followed the arrival of explorers on April 2, 1513: interactions with native peoples, initial efforts to settle Florida, the land and environment, and resulting Spanish influences in the state. A complete program and full speaker biographies are available by visiting the La Florida event page: http://upf.com/LaFlorida.html
