Last month, our Director of Sales and Marketing, Romi Gutierrez, traveled to Sarasota to exhibit our Florida archaeology and anthropology books at the annual meeting of the Florida Anthropological Society.
The meeting’s theme was “The Many Faces of Florida, Past and Present,” and keynote speaker Jerry Milanich—author of various books including his most recent work with co-author Nina J. Root, Enchantments: Julian Dimock’s Photographs of Southwest Florida—spoke about how he became involved in the 1969 excavation of the Yellow Bluffs-Whitaker Mound in Sarasota. We sold nearly every copy of Enchantments, and sold out of Florida Indians and the Invasion from Europe as well as Florida’s Indians from Ancient Times to Present.

Other popular books included The Archaeology and Historical Ecology of Small Scale Economies edited by Victor D. Thompson and James C. Waggoner Jr., which sold out within the first two hours of the meeting. Thompson, along with Island Shores, Distant Pasts co-editor Scott Fitzpatrick, presented “Evaluating Small Islands: Preliminary Results of Archaeological Research at Upper Matecumbe Key” at the meeting.
Keith Ashley, co-editor with Nancy Marie White of Late Prehistoric Florida: Archaeology at the Edge of the Mississippian World, stopped by our booth right before his book sold out so that we could snap this picture. He also spoke at the meeting, presenting on “The Mill Cove Complex: Recent Testing of Domestic and Ritual Middens.”
William B. Lees, co-author of Recalling Deeds Immortal, also stopped by the booth with editorial board member Uzi Baram.
Robert J. Austin, co-author with Barbara A. Purdy of How to Do Archaeology the Right Way, was also in attendance and gave a presentation on the Bayou Park Site and the Elliot’s Point Complex in Northwest Florida. A new edition of their book will release in January, with new, emended, and greatly expanded chapters about recently discovered sites and the development of sophisticated technologies to record and analyze their contents more rapidly and efficiently.
Our newest archaeology book, Rethinking Colonialism edited by Craig N. Cipolla and Katherine Howlett Hayes, also attracted attention at the meeting, as did recent releases Discovering Florida edited and translated by John E. Worth, which sold 5 copies, and La Florida edited by Viviana Díaz Balsera and Rachel A. May, the recent gold medal winner of the Florida Book Awards in Florida nonfiction that sold out completely.
