Island Bodies: Transgressive Sexualities in the Caribbean Imagination by Rosamond King has won the 2015 Caribbean Studies Association Gordon K. and Sybil Lewis Prize for the best book about the Caribbean.

Simone James Alexander has won the 2015 College Language Association Creative Scholarship Award for African Diasporic Women’s Narratives: Politics of Resistance, Survival, and Citizenship. The award, given annually, recognizes outstanding scholarly work.

Good Catch: Recipes and Stories Celebrating the Best of Florida’s Waters by Pam Brandon, Heather McPherson, and Katie Farmand was awarded first place in the 2015 Society of American Travel Writers Eastern Chapter Writing and Photography Award Competition in the category of food and wine. The judges called the work a “brilliant combination of story and service. Delightful art, recipes and stories mak[e] it an engaging and wonderful package.”

Another recent cookbook, Mango by Jen Karetnick received second prize in the 2015 Les Dames d’Escoffier International’s M.F.K. Fisher Awards Contest for Excellence in Culinary Writing. According to the award website, this award is given to women writers whose published works reflect creativity and insight, and illuminate the pivotal roles of food, beverages, the arts of the table, or contribute to our knowledge of those who grow, produce, or prepare nourishment.

Andrew Furman made the short list for the 2015 ASLE Environmental Creative Writing Book Award for his book, Bitten: My Unexpected Love Affair with Florida. “In this collection, Furman has me seeing Florida afresh,” said one of the judges. “I particularly enjoyed ‘Heat,’ in which he explores the physics of heat, the impact that heat has on the non-human world, some Everglades literary history, and the story of Dr John Gorrie, inventor of air conditioning—on whose discovery much of Florida’s current development now depends, for better or worse.” The award recognizes excellence in the field of environmental creative writing.

Luis Martínez-Fernández, author of Revolutionary Cuba: A History is a finalist in the 2015 International Latino Book Awards. The award winner will be announced this weekend during the 2015 ALA Conference.
