Arts of Korea: Histories, Challenges, and Perspectives, edited by Jason Steuber and Allysa B. Peyton, won the Art Libraries Society of North America Southeast Chapter 2019 LoPresti Award for best scholarly publication. This brilliantly illustrated volume assembles the perspectives of art historians, critics, curators, and museum directors from major universities and museums around the world. The LoPresti Award recognizes and encourages excellence in art publications issued in the Southeastern United States.
Madagascar from A to Z: Madagasikara, A ka hatramin’ny Z, with text by Grace Gibson and illustrations by Soleil Nguyen, won the Art Libraries Society of North America Southeast Chapter 2019 LoPresti Award for best children’s book. Madagascar from A to Z is a children’s alphabet book written in English and translated into Malagasy. Published by the LibraryPress@UF, the book exemplifies a deep collaboration among the University of Florida library, undergraduates, library faculty, and Malagasy colleagues.
The History of Human Space Flight by Ted Spitzmiller won the gold medal in the history category of the Military Writers Society of America awards. Highlighting men and women across the globe who have dedicated themselves to pushing the limits of space exploration, this book surveys the programs, technological advancements, medical equipment, and automated systems that have made space travel possible.
Key to the New World: A History of Early Colonial Cuba by Luis Martínez-Fernández won first place in the category Best History Book in English at the 2019 International Latino Book Awards. Key to the New World is the first comprehensive history of early colonial Cuba written in English and fills the gap in our knowledge of the island before 1700. The International Latino Book Awards recognize greatness and quality in publishing by and about Latinos.
“Pedro Pan: The Cuban Children’s Exodus” received the 2019 award for best documentary feature film at the 2019 New York City International Films Infest Festival. This documentary draws on the expertise of Victor Andres Triay, author of Fleeing Castro: Operation Pedro Pan and the Cuban Children’s Program and The Mariel Boatlift: A Cuban-American Journey.
