“Indians Instructing Their Teachers in Archery” depicts Native Americans who were taken from the Midwest and Southwest and imprisoned in St. Augustine at the ancient fort of San Marcos, which was called Fort Marion in this era. Harriet Beecher Stowe and other white women taught them the fundamentals of reading and writing, and in return, they taught the women to shoot arrows.
