Most people expect the propaganda of authoritarian regimes to be openly political, praising military figures and openly supporting state repression. Yet the official campaigns of Brazil’s military dictatorship (1964-1985) were different. Aesthetically appealing and apolitical, they aimed to “enlighten” and “civilize.” In this book, Nina Schneider shows that many short films of the time encouraged civic-mind ideals while also trying to distract from the regime’s atrocities. Brazilian Propaganda analyzes the strategy behind these films and offers a new interpretation of the propagandists’ intentions.
